Statement Jewellery - Denise J Reytan

Wow, thats all i need to say.

Denise Reytan's incredible mix of materials that somehow put together create most seriously stylish statement jewellery pieces. I have to say, i am quite obsessed with the Berlin based designer's use of colour, portion and materials that makes each piece so different to appeal to everyone's tastes.

Anyhow, these are my favourites - love the one with the protractor. Take a look a her site - i could be there for ages.

It would pretty much be like this. Amanda Wachob's beautiful work varies from abstract paint-strokes to conceptual line designers.

I prefer the more abstract painterly stuff, her illustrations look like they have been painted on canvas before they are added to the body and her work seriously gives me a good argument in the for or against debate in getting a tattoo.

So came across Nigel Peake, when i visited 'Pick Me Up' . When most work there was visually shouting with bold colours and eye-catching text, his work was detailed, subtle and would intimately draw you in to really look at his work. Infact, I was so taken i bought his book, Strom to remind me of his work.

Having looked at his website, Nigel has done a variety of work from Howies to Hermes and Ninja Tune.

Shape, Colour and Vision

I like Leslie's Barnes description of herself - 'an animator/illustrator from scotland who likes drinking tea, polishing brass buttons and wearing the occasional old lady hat!'

Leslie uses shapes and colours in a truly magical way thats manages to create a alice in wonderland type world where even the silliest things are possible.

I recently came across her work, but i think she has been going strong for a while with a lot of success naming The Economist, Amelia's Magazine, Belle & Sebastian as employers and she recently did some work for London Fashion Week that just went by which you can see on her blog

Anyway, enough rambling.

Aussie Duo - Goldenink Collaborative seem to have the balance of work down to a tee.

Katherine Wheeler makes the porcelain jewellery pieces and Abbey Seymour the printmaker adorns each piece with fine lined illustration work.

This stuff is so beautiful i could n't even think about wearing it, cast your eyes upon it yourselves..

This fantastic illustrator Studio Legohead really likes drawing dogs ( and a few cats here and there..)

Jo has recently ventured into drawing a type i call ' fashion dogs' - small things like Pugs with printed scarfs. These are some of my favourite drawings.

You can buy here prints at her etsy shop which are very reasonable and i think would make a lovely present.

All i can imagine is dreaming the life i would lead with these stunning tiles in my life. Created from Lava stone, Made A Mano handpaint all of their tiles and have created a serious style aesthetic to go with.

Valentine's Pop Up Shop at The Create Space

My good friend, Jill invited me to help her plan the workshop space in Bethnal Green for their special Valentine's Pop Up Shop.

Volunteers of the space made the props, and designer makers and teacher's from the space brought their products to sell!On Friday, we merchandised the products and put the final touches to it and daa-da!

A successful pop up that was extended for an extra day.

Ernesto Neto - Hayward Gallery

When i was in Copenhagen, Steph, Alex and i went over to Malmo, Sweden and saw Ernesto Neto's amazing work. It was like the adult equivalent of a children's interactive centre. Everything was white, tactile, burrowed fabric holes appeared from nowhere, endless mazes, dead ends, fabric walls above, below and sideways.

Anyhow, the Brazilians does a number of shows but this one is at the Hayward Gallery as part of a festival of Brazil.

I managed to get a sneak preview and it does not disappoint. This time, he layered different coloured mesh-like walls to add depth, has ceiling pockets of pebbles, globe lights and even a outdoor pool designed the 'Neto' way.

Well, Sadly i am not much of a Keira fan, but i have to say that this short film does have an increasing intensity as the couple played by Keira Knightley and artist, Stuart Pearson Wright try to find each other and become desperate. Mum's the word

Excuse the slightly dodgy photo but black does not come out very well on screen.

I made this hat recently for my mum. It is a hand blocked fur felt cloche with a hand molded brim to give a more flattering frame to the face than the usual bell shape which is typical on this style.

Come January when I do my BTEC there will be plenty more where this came from. It's her Christmas present so keep schtum !!

I watched an interview about his work, and he is so intelligent. He uses books and glues them together, painstakingly cutting away old pages of history and science, re-looking at how we disregard books for the internet and reinventing our idea of them. I've just found out he has an exhibition in NY, so I'm definitely going to have a look.

During a trip to Berlin, i went to a exhibition on Bauhaus which showcase different disciplines of art and design that they were not know for. The school encouraged its students to experiment with photography alongside their own specialism,to be involved with dance installations and costumes. All the work was still new and fresh - still relevant today as it was went they produced their work.

Coffee: A serious matter...

My top places for coffee...

A bit London-centric, but then, I live in London, I haven't been to NZ yet, and the coffee in Buenos Aires is terrible...

1. Abraco Coffee, New York WEBSITE
Go in to this tiny pit stop for a cawfee made lovingly by Jamie the LA hippie/coffeemeister who knows his beans and his jazzzz...
Felt instantly part of the village with the welcome received and the pastries and snacks are tastily moorish. Jamie, we miss you lots!

2. Monmouth Coffee, London WEBSITE
This is the original Monmouth Coffee on Monmouth St in Covent Garden. A little shop, now it's bigger than Jamie's place but the service is excellent, look for the bearded guy with specs (sorry don't know your name) or one of the girls working at the back. Another warm welcome and a mobile free zone : )
I prefer this one to the Borough Market version, both have awkward seating but Borough Market can just be too full on with people, tourists and pigeons plopping in your cappuccino.

3. TomTom, London WEBSITE
Another friendly welcome from the lads in TomTom, a newly opened coffee version, sister to the cigar store. Haven't tried the pastries because quite frankly £2.20 for a croissant is painful. The coffee is lovely and there's a big communal table. Note, I prefer the sugar in this place to Monmouth's unrefined cane sugar which is a bit sickly.

4. Flat White, London WEBSITE
I never believed that Antipodeans had the low down on good coffee until a Kiwi put me in my place with a visit to Flat White. If you can put up with the Soho crowd, it's a bit of a hustle and bustle buzzing (not with caffeine but work energy) place. Sister branch Milk Bar (on nearby Bateman Street) has opened recently, nice but the smell of pee from the alley across the road is not the most ideal environment for sipping your piccolo "al fresco"

Viktor & Rolf Retrospective

I think you re right Mr D, a seriously lack of creativity. Anyhow, Viktor and Rolf.

Even though a fantastic exhibition- not as dazzlingly surreal as you might expect.
As their collections are so heavily based around their conceptual fashion shows. The majority of the exhibition displayed key pieces from their strongest, most unusual collection with a video for the show played behind them.

The best bits?- The giant dollhouse displaying mini versions of their garments worn by hand-crafted dolls that looked like the original model who wore it. Tori Amos composing and singing at their bedtime collection. As with Rufus Wainwright singing a ballroom dance based collection for the 40s.

I did love it though

Ok, so it's not actually my work.. but I did spend about a week and a half re-touching it and getting it looking lovely. It looked absolutely terrible before.. All green and weird.

for those of you who are yet to buy Grafik 162 (in shops now) this is the cover, run donw to borders or wherever and have a look at my photoshop skillz (innit). Of course the rest of the magazine is fabulous too (fashion special report).

The artist who made this is Daren Lago and it's a giant gucci loafer! There is also another image in the magazine of a similarly huge stilletto (spl?!). Nice

just for reference, this is how it arrived on my desk. ugh!

"China Design Now" at Liberty of London

Liberty is hosting an exibition in co-operation with the V&A on China design. It's really worth a visit, there is something for everyone - disciplines include fashion, photography, ceramics and art installation.

I personally adored the photography by Michael Wolf. It's hard not to notice the giant toy and portrait installation, however personally I found his smaller snapshots, dotted around the 4th floor space extremely beautiful and haunting. His combinatiion of colour and imagery is truly fascinating.

You can always pop in for a cup of their fantastic selection of Chinese teas, conveniently located in the exibition space - a sure way to give tired feet a rest from all that shopping! Try the hot chocolate green tea for something more unusual.

Fascination with nature

Kieran and i went to the British Museum a few weekends ago, for some free exploration. We came across this small exhibition called the fascination with nature. Based on Chinese art and interpretation, it wasincredible to see the amount of skilled craftsmenship that went into the small pieces of work. Its free to see.

On our way to the nature exhibition, i went through a printmaking gallery which contain both classic and contemporary works. I found it just as good as the nature exhibition.

I was doing some research on fashion collections, and came across Matthew Williamson's collection. Im not usually a big fan with his fuchsia pink and gold but i fell in love with most of collection. Mixing furs with hi-tech sports fabrics, slight sheens and subtle glitter. Beautiful colour palette and wonderful prints, reminding me of Steph 's landscape prints! gorgeous

Ok, so this is my first post!

For those among you who don't buy Grafik magazine (shame on you - it's a fine publication... with very handsome and talented design assistants!), this is something we featured in our special report this month.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde's only novel, and is quite simply superb. If you haven't read it then this is an excellent opportunity to do so in a unusual way. This particular version is published by Four Corners Books and is designed by John Morgan, it's unusual in that it takes the typographic and layout formats of a magazine rather than a traditional "novel" - this being a direct reference to the fact that the book (as with most books of the period) was originally published (serialized) by installment in a magazine.
It also takes reference (and images) from mens life/style magazines of the 60's & 70's, which is an entirely appropriate and in keeping with the books themes of personal beauty/vanity.

They're cheap-as-chips too at about £12 - you can get them from the Design Museum and Amazon. These are beautiful objects and produced in limited numbers so run to your wallets and get one before they run out!

It was beautiful, the water was so milky and the volcano rock! I was in heaven, it was SO warm. An expensive place but recommended, everyone is very cool and really nice.x
